Pet Food Brands

Different pet food brands are found in grocery and big box pet supply and general merchandise stores across the nation. Colorful designs on the bags beckon to the buyers and it is not surprising that many new pet owners find that it is rather hard to pick and choose. For this reason, some buyers rely on endorsements, such as celebrity spokespeople or the mighty name o the Animal Planet television channel which has lent its name and logo to certain pet food brands.

Other consumers have taken to reading the claims made on the different bags, but it appears that each and every food choice promises to give your animals a shiny and sleek looking coat, contribute to bone health, and get them off to a good start in lie. Furthermore, the senior formulas of many different pet food brands claim that with the help of their food the dogs or cats will be able to live long, healthy and also happy lives.

Yet considering the disparity in price, it is hard to believe that truly each and every kind of pet food will be able to deliver on the promises made. To this end some websites have been started that have as their mission to evaluate not only the claims made by various pet food brands, but also offer side by side analysis of the ingredients and the quantities in which they occur.

It is interesting to note that the more expensive pet food brands use purer ingredients than the cheaper kinds. For example, while one brand states that it is made from lamb, another lists lamb by-products, while still another lists lamb meal. Similarly, sodium content may be vastly different, as may be the first listed ingredients. While in dog foods you would want to see meat being the first ingredient, several less expensive foods list grain first.

As you can see, all pet food is most certainly not created equal, and it is the cheaper brands that you will need to watch a little more closely before choosing to purchase them for your pet. While this is not to say that inexpensive pet food will harm your animal, the fact remains that the cheap stuff does not always stack up to the quality of ingredients that may be found in the more expensive brands. By the way, in addition to price and ingredients do also take a look at weight. Some of the more expensive brands are packed in bigger boxes and bags but actually contain less of the product – by weight – than their less expensive counterparts!
