Pet Food Basics

Pet food basics seem to be too elemental for the serious pet lover to consider oftentimes. Yet it is a sad reality that many an animal’s health is being compromised not because of inadequate care or substandard living quarters, but instead because some pet food basics were either neglected or the pet lover simply did not think about them when caring for their animals. Perhaps everyone knows that animals need to have access to good quality food and clean water on a daily basis, but do you know how much to feed on a day to day basis?

Do not underestimate your pet’s nutritional needs but instead to ahead and read the instructions on the back of the bag to find out how much food the pets will need to be given. Incidentally, pet food basics dictate that an animal’s nutritional needs will change as its life circumstances are altered. Thus, if your pet is pregnant, very young, or older, its needs are different and you may need to use different kinds of feed so as to meet all the requirements the pet has.

Pet food basics are of course not only concerned with quality and quantity, but also with the way the food is being presented to the pet. A clean dish is a must, but if you feed your pet outside, did you know that it will not be the only critter munching away on it? Thus, if you are careful in measuring out the food kibbles, but you are inadvertently feeding the neighborhood cats, blue jays, possums and raccoons, your might be surprised to notice how little food your pet is actually eating. For this reason, you may wish to feed your pet inside or be prepared to increase the quantity of food given to the animal.

Last but not least, pet food basics also concern themselves with the freshness of the food. While kibbles will remain fresh and tasty throughout the day, wet food, such as canned foods, have a rather short window of freshness once the can has been opened and you will want to make sure that you do not keep the food out after it has reached the point where it is no longer fresh and tasty but perhaps has become a breeding ground for bacteria and a serious attraction to the ant hill down the way. If you observe these little tips and tricks, your pet will be sure to thank you!
